Thanks for the info.  Now, riddle me this--what happened to Valentine? Did Ross never acknowledge him? Did Demelda know for sure that he was Ross's son?  Did this continue to affect their marriage?  What about Demeldza's other 4 brothers?

Hi Corky,

Your question made me pay much more attention to Mrs. Chynoweth as I was just at the point in reading "Warleggan" where she had an "apoplexy".  I hadn't realized before what an important event it was as I'm sure it was the main reason Elizabeth agreed to marry George.  He offered to take care of her parents at Trenwith and before that Elizabeth saw her future "as one in which sickness and age and responsibility were her only companion".  Her mother after the stroke was paralyzed in one arm and hardly able to speak.  This was 1793 and she died in 1804 so she lived for 11 years after her stroke.  She died when she was 74.

In The Black Moon Elizabeth's mother, after Elizabeth's fall down the stairs, "in spite of her blind eye, lame leg and stumbling tongue . . . insisted on staying in her daughter's room to be there if she woke".  She was also mentioned in The Angry Tide just after Elizabeth gave birth to Ursula that she was delighted to have a granddaughter.  Her voice was slurred and she also mentions her name - Joan nee le Grice.  I didn't think her name was ever mentioned in the books - she was always Mrs. Chenowyth.  At this time in TAT George reflects to himself "here (at Trenwith) they lived in comfort and idleness, warmed and fed and waited on, and would do so till they died."  Ross also tells GC in Stranger From the Sea that after Elizabeth's death George "maintained a small staff at Trenwith to look after your grandparents".

I will look out for other mentions of Mrs. Chynoweth as I go along.
