Winston Graham : 30 June 1908 - 10 July 2003

Winston Graham O.B.E.

Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature

(30 June 1910 - 10 July 2003)

In fond memory of a wonderful author and a true Gentleman

Postscript to Winston Graham's book "Poldark's Cornwall" first published 1983.

This summer I walked along the beach of Porth Joke. It was in the middle of a spell of bad weather, but a golden day had slipped in in spite of the forecasts. It was evening, and the few people who had been there during the day had gone. There was no wind. The sea was quiet. The sun was two hand spaces from the horizon. The sand ripples were as regular as lines in a child's exercise book. Barley and wheat were ripening in the sloping fields nearby. When I have to take permanent leave of Cornwall I shall wish it to be on such an evening as this. Atque in perpetuum, frater, ave atque vale...

But next summer perhaps the sun will be shining again.
