Ross and Caroline would have been at fifteen paces with pistols inside of two weeks... :) Two absolutist thinkers.

A Demelza and Dwight match would have worked. The most likely time for that Alternative Universe would have been when Ross was convicted by the Jury fot the wrecking (hanged/transported). If Demelza had been forced out of Nampara by her father, she might have been trapped at Illuggan. Next most likely would have been if she had been dismissed by Ross after The Night- and stayed to work in the district.

Poor Joan Pascoe. Imagine having to compete with both Demelza *and* Caroline.

Given her love of nature, plants, flowers and probably herbs too, along with her great affinity with people, her intuitive mind and holistic, common sense approach, I like to think that she would still have met and become friends with Dwight and set up a thriving practice for alternative medicine in the area.  This scenario could have worked very well, as she and Dwight would, no doubt, have built up a deep respect and friendship and Demelza, with her quick, enquiring mind could well have learned much from him, maybe even helping to nurse his patients and administer drugs, becoming an invaluable and respected aid to the overworked Doctor.

Maybe, if he had met Demelza whilst she was single, they might even have fallen for each other and eventually become a very happily married couple.  I have always felt that if she had not been married to Ross, there might well have been a great possibility for romantic chemistry between these two warm natured characters.

Another, what if? scenario! There is a paragraph in Ross Poldark which suggests the likely life plan of Demelza if she had not become Ross's wife. It is when she is still very young and during her first year at nampara, and describes the rapid growth of her mind and character and maturing body and concludes that within a couple of years she would be courting some young miner.
I think that might have been the outcome if she had only been at nampara for a short while but i cant imagine she would have been  able to live within the narrow confines of what was expected of a miners wife once she had experienced a taste of life with Ross and all his house and lifestyle offered her (even as a servant, she had access to books and musical instruments and a far better standard of living).
would she have gone to a town and city and taken some employment or training?, would she have looked to work at a big house and not married?  Ross's life would not have changed in a material way without Demelza but she would have had a far different experience and it would be interesting to see what others think she might have done. I havent dared think what she would have done if Ross had actually married anyone else! Ruth Teague!!!!
