Would it even have been possible for Hugh to be there at the birth? I thought they weren't allowed? Although there are a few thoughts which ran through Demelza's head at Julia's birth that she didn't want Ross there, but is this implying maybe he could have been there if he'd wanted?

It would have been awful, though Demelza would never have told Ross it was his. Maybe it would have developed into the George/Valentine relationship though I think Ross may have doubted it as soon as she told him. He was always very open that he was aware of her and Hugh. He made no attempts to keep it to himself.

Hugh wouldn't have had much say in any of it, cos he would have sadly died soon after the baby had been conceived.

would have had diasterous consequences given ross' hot-headedness. it was one thing for him to suspect that something had gone on causing him "to lose all faith in humanity." even in the case of valentine, though he suspected, he could never be certain. but to have it confirmed by the birth of a child would have certainly pushed him over the edge.

It would have been disasterous as Hugh would have insisted on being involved and acknowledged as the childs father and Demelza would have been torn between doing the right thing and saving her marriage. Hugh , would probably have insisted on being at the birth, being the sensitive, in touch with his feminine side type of man he was and it would have all been sooo bad. Thankgoodness we never had to face all of that!

no certainly is inconceivable Bella, I've often wondered about it too, but have to say it gives me a sick feeling in my stomach to even think about it.  Sure that Demelza would have come clean with Ross and would never have tried to pass it off as his.  Would like to think that Ross would remember his own mistakes in the light of his conversation with Elizabeth in Sawle churchyard before making any rash decisions about their marriage, but somehow I don't think he could have kept his jealousy under control well enough to deal with it calmly.

This topic has often entered my thoughts....and yet I cannot imagine how Ross would have reacted....truly, I just have no idea what he would have done.....it seems none of you can either.....perhaps it is inconceivable?

mmmmm, now that would have been interesting and devastating..... dont think she would/could have claimed the child was Ross's but its interesting that she never seemed to even think there was a possbility of that occurring...
