It was just Stranger from the Sea. I have only ever watched it once so my memory of how bad it was is fading. I do recall that Mel Martin had none of Demelzas humour or warmth, she seemed stressed and very intense and was obviously playing it completely opposite to Angharad Rees.

Whatever it would have cost them would have been more than made up in ad revenues/ratings.  Even if Ross and Demelza aren't major figures in those novels, they just can't be replaced.

Was it only Stranger from the Sea or did it include all three of those novels?

I saw Stranger from the Sea when it was first broadcast in 1996 and i was so disapointed. When it was announced on 4th january 1995 (on the very day i gave birth to my daughter Verity) that finally a new adaptation of the remaining  Poldark books was to be made, I was elated and soooooooo excited. (you can imagine what this must have meant to me if i was thrilled by anything other than my baby and an ice pack after several hours in labour) Surely a series would follow? and the poldark fever  that would undoubtedly be unleashed on the nation would ensure either reruns of the classic tv series or maybe even a new adaptation of the original books. The future looked bright but soon clouds darkened the horizon and rumours of trouble at HTV central rumbled in the press, the great Robin and Angharad were no longer going to play Ross and Demelza . WHo would dare to try and emulate their success?? The suspect from the first Prime Suspect and Mel Smith(?) surely not the fat one from Not the nine oclock news, how could this be?? John Bowe was a fine actor we were assured and Mel Martin was pretty, slim and had already made her name in a period drama (love of lydia) so poldark was in safe hands. Alas it was not to be and it was doomed from the minute they dropped Robin and Angaharad. Have to say though that i dont think even they could have saved this turkey and it may have ruined what wonderful memories they had created all those years ago. Such a shame though, it was an opportunity that was completely and utterly wasted and i shall never forgive HTV for messing it up. furious

I haven't seen Poldark 3 and didn't even know it existed!
Not quite sure what you mean by Poldark 3 ? I haven't seen any of the current DVD's which apparently were edited down in places from the original Series 1 and Series 2 PAL videos. The only other "Poldark" I know of is a DVD, not sure if there was a video, of "Strangers from the Sea" produced in the late Nineties by ITV which was another UK channel similar to the BBC. And I never saw that either as from all I read and heard about it it was disliked generally and "a flop" overall. smile

I didn't know about a Poldark 3, either. Is this one of McWorster's videos?
I couldn't imagine a Poldark book without Ross, but I suppose that's what the last few books were (shh! Don't tell me, because I haven't read them!). imslow.gif

Luke and Laura are of General Hospital fame, since around the 80s, when their wedding scenes got huge ratings.   Whenever one of the actors leaves, they write around it rather than dare to attempt a recast!  Luke is on it to this day.

I haven't seen Poldark 3 and didn't even know it existed!

Are Ross and Demelza minor characters in it?  I vaguely remember those three novels and seem to remember WG trying to create more adventure stories for Ross, but I could see concentrating on the second generation.

Ugh.  I cannot imagine anyone besides Robin Ellis and Angrahad (sp?) Rees playing those characters. bleh.gif
I'll have to check out your videos, McWorster.  One of these days when I have a lot of time, because my Internet is really sluggish. pc.gif
Which soap has Luke and Laura?  I confess that I'm a Days Of Our Lives fan. teevee.gif

Thank you all.  My birthday is in August and my nephews, who are twins, were born on 12/29.  Makes it easy to remember.

I saw you on you-tube, mcworster.  Thanks for posting all those clips.   The cult of Poldark I have never seen before and it is great!

biggrin

ETA:  Recasting of Ross and Demelza!!!!  brainless.gif  What a travesty!  furiousweirdfaceblehblankstarefuriousfuriousfurious
That is as bad, if not worse, than recasting Luke and Laura of US soap opera fame!

Hi, I'm glad to have found this board.  I recently started reading the Poldark series again.  I saw the first TV series first, when I was in high school, in believe.  When I found the books, I bought them all.  Even had to order the later ones from the UK, because at the time they weren't being sold in the US, at least that I could find.

I now have tapes of both TV series.   I really enjoy watching them over every once in a while.
