You are probably right, Ross.  A smallish house right on the extremist edge of Trenwith land. biggrin

The land where Joshua farmed and mined and subsequently built Nampara was also family owned though, so perhaps there was already some dwelling but not substantial enough to raise a family in.

If Ross was 5+ when Nampara was built, he would likely remember it being constructed.

It would be lovely to know the story of 20 years before 1783...

Referring to the family tree....

I think that because Claude Henry being the father of Joshua, Charles and Maria, who was himself the son of Charles Vivian Raffe Poldark the original owner of Trenwith by virtue of his marriage to Anna Maria Trenwith of Trenwith, the estate would have been quite substantial. Consequently there could well have been many working in the mine and elsewhere say in the main house, who would have therefore been entitled to live in whatever tenant accomodation was most likely already there as the mines themselves had already been mined for many years previously.

One guess could therefore be that prior to Joshua building Nampara he Grace and Ross and their other child would have been able to either live in Trenwith or at least in some respectable cottage also on the estate especially because Grace had cured Joshua of his wilder sides, though of course Tholly was still very much around.

Just a thought....

Nampara was begun by Joshua Poldark in 1765.  By then Ross was 5 years old.  Where did the family live before Nampara?

I am tempted to think they were at Trenwith, but that I doubt.  Charles was never close to Joshua, especially when he was getting up to his usual tricks of wenching and whatnot, although of course by then he had settled down happily with Grace. Ross we know spent much time at Trenwith,  but Joshua was not admitted or much spoken of from what we can glean.

Perhaps the family lived in a cottage somewhere on Poldark land, or maybe had some accommodation at Wheal Grace, pro tem, until they could move into Nampara.

What does anyone else think?
